The wonderful 1st grade students of the Learning Community Charter School, of Jersey City NJ, have honored the Veterans of the Samuel R. Shelton VFW Post 2294, by drawing from their young hearts, their sentiments for the Vets.
Jennifer Hughes, the Development & Communications Director, at LCCS, contacted the Post to arrange for the student's gifts of art to reach the Post.
Derek L. Farthing, the post's Quartermaster, and recently sworn in as Commander, VFW District 3 (Hudson County), responded to Ms. Hughes and arranged to visit the school on July 21, 2022. The trip for the Commander, was self-rewarding. His daughter, Shaunte, is a 2007 alumni. Also, during the school's second through fourth years, he served on LCCS' Board of Trustees.
LCCS is a top-rated and award winning charter school inn New Jersey, and has set the bar for others to follow. It was originally co-located with the Boys & Girls Club of Jersey City, at the previous location on Grand street at Grove street. The school now sits on JFK Blvd, where the statue of President Lincoln guards it to his left.
VFW Post 2294 was incorporated in 1931, and has been at its present location, of 98 Oak St, since 1948. It is the only VFW post in Jersey City. Evert 1st Tuesday of the month, the 2294 holds its "Feed The Vets" program, whereas all Veterans are welcome to come for a good meal, comradeship, plus valuable information from a test speaker or two. The eating begins at 5:30pm...see you there.
Please enjoy the wonderful pictures from the LCCS students. It is indeed an honor to view them.
